What is LitFiber?

LitFiber brings fiber internet to homes and businesses across the western Kentucky area. Our mission is to deliver fast, fairly-priced, and open internet service — using the best technologies, methods, and people to accomplish that. With multi-gig speeds and advanced tech, we support everything you dream of doing online from working at home to creating content and beyond. Plus, you’ll never have to worry about data caps, annual contracts, or hidden fees.

Is LitFiber in my area?

LitFiber is always growing. We added tons of new addresses last year — and we’re continuing that same momentum.

Do I need a router for LitFiber?

All LitFiber service plans include next-gen equipment at no extra cost, including a router. You’re also welcome to use your own router if you already have one you prefer.

How to sign up for LitFiber?
  1. Visit litfiber.us
  2. Enter your address, then click the “Check availability” button to see if service is available for your location.
  3. If LitFiber is available at your address, follow the on-screen instructions to sign up.
How long does it take to activate?

The 1 Gig plan can take up to an hour to install with either a self-install kit or a professional installation. The 2, 5, and 8 Gig plans require professional installation and typically takes up to two hours. These time estimates include installation, set-up, and any software updates to the equipment.

How is fiber optic internet installed?

With LitFiber, the installation process includes three main steps:

  1. First, fiber cable is placed at the street level.
  2. Then, fiber is run from the street to homes and apartment buildings, and connected using a box on the outside of those homes and buildings (known as an NIU). We call this a ‘drop install’ and you don’t need to be home when it happens. The NIU connects your home or apartment building to the fiber that runs through the neighborhood.
  3. Finally, a technician will come to your home and install a Fiber Jack if you don’t already have one. This small box will be where internet enters your home. The Fiber Jack will then be connected to your router. Depending on whether you choose self install or pro install, this can be done by the technician or by someone in your household.
What kind of equipment is needed?

When you sign up for LitFiber, we’ll provide all the equipment you’ll need for your internet to run smoothly.

Here is what’s included with most of our plans:

A Network Interface Unit (NIU)

This is a box that a technician will place outside your home or apartment building. It’s in a location that you typically won’t see and won’t need to access. The NIU is the designated point between the rest of the fiber optic cable running through your neighborhood and your home or building. Once installed, you won’t need to think about it anymore.

A Fiber Jack

This is another small box where internet enters your home from the outside. If there isn’t already a Fiber Jack in your home, our technicians will set this up during your installation appointment.

A router

You’ll need a router to connect to Wi-Fi. Your plan will determine what kind of router you get, but you also use your own router if you like.

A mesh extender
You may or may not need a mesh extender for more internet coverage based on the size of your home or business. Most of our plans come with at least one Mesh Extender included, but you can request more for an additional fee.
